Tips to Being the Best Divorced Dad

There are a lot of steriotypes that still exist in family law about the role of mother versus father in a divorce or custody case.  Many still believe that the courts will favor the mother no matter what and that the father will often be given the shorter end of the deal- less time with the children and more financial obligation.

In reality, this view-point has shifted dramatically and ultimtely, Pennsylvania and New Jersey encourage a child's access to both parents.  Additionally, rather than automatically choosing mother over father, the court will look at a parent's ability to care and provide for the child and provide for his or her best interests.

Despite discarding the old steriotype and the new wave of equal views of mom and dad, as a divorcing father you can still keep the following in mind to be the best parent possible through this hard time:

1. Find an attorney that is willing to resolve divorce peacefully with the children in mind.

2. Show up when you say you are going to show up for your child or children.  Let them know that they can depend on your word and you.

3. Be fully engaged during the time you are with your children.  (put the cell phone down!)

4. Be cordial to their other parent.  Try not to fight with that person in front of the children.  You do not have to be best friends, but try to be respectful.

5. Know your children's likes, dislikes and interests.  Show them that you are aware and paying attention.
