Family Law Finally Comes to Reality TV

On June 4th pop culture television juggernaut, Bravo TV premieres its new show "Untying the Knot," adding family law to it's list of topics slated for reality programming. Starring divorce attorney and top mediator, Vikki Ziegler, Esquire, couples appear on the show to divide their assets out of court. According to, "[e]ach 30-minute episode features a different divorcing couple struggling to divvy up their belongings that range from dazzling diamonds to the family pets. Expert appraisers Michael and Mark Millea evaluate the items in question and help Vikki determine a fair division of assets."

The show promises drama and dubs Ziegler a "Divorce Diva." But how close to "reality" is this show going to be? Ziegler practices in New York and New Jersey, states with varrying differences to Pennsylvania Family Law. I have decided to watch each episode and blog comparisons to real life divorcing couples, between the family law statutes and practices in NY, NJ and PA, as well as my own professional experience. Stay tuned...
